Antibiotics are commonly misused in various ways, such as when taken for viral infections, being given without a professional assessment of the patient and when given to promote growth in animals, amongst others. As such, one of the key messages of the WAAW is; “Think twice, seek advice”
According to FIDSAA (Federation of Infectious Diseases Societies of Southern Africa) Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major threat to the public health and has the potential to negatively impact our society. It is a serious and growing global health risk, which needs to be prioritized at local and international levels.
